When the Philip Merrill College of Journalism leaves its current home of 50 years and moves into the new Knight Hall, it will be quite a transformation for the school. The following are the firms and people responsible for helping to launch Merrill into the next era of news.
Design: Grimm+Parker Architects
Organized in 1972, Grimm + Parker Architects has become one of the largest design firms in the Washington region with a staff of more than 75 professionals. They are recognized as leaders in community-based architecture with comprehensive experience and expertise in the design of educational, library, performing arts and other community facilities. Grimm + Parker has won numerous AIA awards from various chapters including the Maryland Chapter, Potomac Valley Chapter, Chesapeake Chapter, Northern Virginia Chapter, and the Boston Chapter. These awards have been received for a wide variety of building types including educational, public, commercial, and residential.
Grimm+Parker has designed such signature spaces as the Strathmore Concert Hall and the Rockville Library. On the Maryland campus they designed the Nyumburu Cultural Center and the latest addition to Van Munching Hall.
Construction Manager: J.V. Schafer & Sons
J. Vinton Schafer & Sons, Inc. is a construction management firm with over 88 years of experience. It provides a full range of construction management services to educational, institutional, healthcare, industrial, commercial and governmental clients. Founded in 1919 as a home builder, J. Vinton Schafer & Sons, Inc. entered the industrial and governmental construction market in the early 40's to service the war effort. Since then Schafer has worked on noteworthy projects including renovations of the Baltimore Pennsylvania Station, The Walters Art Gallery and the Cloisters Project for Howard Hughes Medical Institute. On the Maryland campus, they are currently supervising the renovations to the Tawes Fine Arts Building and the Denton Dining Hall.
